Nasal Polyps Treatment

Nasal Polyps Treatment

Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of your nasal passages or sinuses. They hang down like tiny grapes or teardrops. When they grow large or form in clusters, they block the nasal airways, leading to breathing difficulties and chronic sinus problems.

Key Symptoms

Small nasal polyps might not cause any symptoms. However, larger growths or multiple polyps can lead to:

Persistent Nasal Congestion

A constantly blocked or stuffy nose that makes breathing through the nose difficult.

Loss of Smell and Taste

A significant reduction or complete loss of the sense of smell (anosmia) and taste.

Runny Nose & Postnasal Drip

Continuous mucus drainage from the nose or down the back of the throat.

Facial Pain or Pressure

A feeling of heaviness or aching in the forehead, cheeks, or around the eyes.

Snoring

• Breathing through the mouth at night, which often leads to loud snoring or disrupted sleep.

Common Causes & Triggers

Nasal polyps result from chronic inflammation in the nasal passages. This long-term irritation is frequently linked to:

Asthma

Individuals with asthma have a much higher risk of developing polyps due to airway inflammation.

Allergies

Chronic environmental allergies, such as hay fever or sensitivity to dust mites and pet dander.

Chronic Sinusitis

Long-standing or recurring sinus infections.

Aspirin Sensitivity

A condition known as Samter's Triad, where a person has asthma, nasal polyps, and an allergic-like reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs (painkillers).

Genetics

A family history of nasal polyps or genetic factors that alter how the nasal mucosa reacts to inflammation.

Diagnosis

An Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist typically diagnoses nasal polyps using the following methods:

Nasal Endoscopy

The doctor inserts a thin, lighted tube with a camera (endoscope) into the nose to visually inspect the passages and locate the polyps.

CT Scan

An imaging test that provides detailed pictures of the sinuses to determine the exact size, location, and extent of the polyps.

Allergy Testing

Skin or blood tests to pinpoint environmental triggers causing the chronic inflammation.

Treatment Options

The primary goal of treatment is to reduce the size of the polyps, eliminate them if necessary, and prevent the inflammation from returning.

A. Medical Treatments

  • Nasal Corticosteroid Sprays: Medications like Fluticasone (Flonase) or Mometasone (Nasonex) are the most common treatments. They target inflammation directly in the nose to shrink polyps and prevent them from returning.
  • Oral or Injectable Corticosteroids: • If sprays do not work, oral medications like Prednisone may be prescribed. Because of potential long-term side effects, they are used strictly for short periods.
  • Biologic Medications: • For severe, recurring polyps, advanced injectable treatments like Dupilumab (Dupixent) are available. They target the specific proteins responsible for tissue inflammation.
  • Antibiotics & Antihistamines: Prescribed if the polyps are complicated by a bacterial sinus infection or severe allergy symptoms.

B. Surgical Treatment

If medications do not shrink the polyps enough to restore comfortable breathing, surgery is recommended.

  • Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): This is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. Using an endoscope and tiny surgical instruments, the surgeon removes the polyps and widens the sinus openings without making external cuts on the face.

C. Long-Term Management & Prevention

Nasal polyps have a high tendency to recur, even after successful surgery. Long-term home care is vital:

  • Saline Nasal Rinses: Regularly washing the nasal passages with a neti pot or saline spray removes allergens, flushes out thick mucus, and keeps the tissue hydrated.
  • Avoid Irritants: Minimize exposure to airborne irritants like cigarette smoke, chemical fumes, dust, and debris.
  • Use a Humidifier: Adding moisture to the air in your home helps keep your nasal passages from drying out and swelling.
